"Bombay Velvet" is an Indian crime thriller film, directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap. The film is set in the 1960s and revolves around the city of Bombay, now known as Mumbai. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Karan Johar in lead roles. The film was released on May 15, 2015, and was met with mixed reviews.
The film’s story is set in Bombay during the 1960s, where a street fighter named Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) dreams of becoming a big shot. He becomes friends with a journalist named Balraj (Karan Johar) and a jazz singer named Rosie Noronha (Anushka Sharma). Together, they start a nightclub called “Bombay Velvet” and soon become embroiled in the city’s underworld.
The film’s biggest strength is its production design, which recreates the look and feel of 1960s Bombay with great attention to detail. The art direction, costumes, and music all transport the viewer to a bygone era. Ranbir Kapoor’s performance as Johnny Balraj is also commendable, and he manages to capture the character’s desperation and ambition with great nuance.
However, the film’s weaknesses lie in its convoluted plot and pacing. The story is too complex and jumps between too many characters, making it difficult to keep track of the narrative. Additionally, the film’s runtime of almost two and a half hours feels overly long and indulgent.
Despite these shortcomings, “Bombay Velvet” is still worth a watch for its stunning visuals and strong performances. It may not be a perfect film, but it is a valiant attempt at recreating a time and place that is often romanticized in Indian popular culture.
