In early 1960, Nasa invites astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) for their program named Gemini. Program includes improvement in space travelling and other training methods helpful in future lunar landing. Russia has already completed several successful space missions during this time. Pressure was building upon US and Nasa and does not want to lose the status of world power. In addition, there is regular criticism in the public, because of various failed attempts by NASA.
Nasa comes up with a mission to land man on the moon and Neil Armstrong is appointed as the commander of the mission called Apollo 11, the first space mission to the moon. With this big responsibility, a lot of psychological pressure builds upon him, his wife Janet (Claire Foy) and his two sons. The couple is also suffering from a serious incident occurred in the past but determined Neil is all ready to embark on this daredevil journey.
